Why we love eco-friendly Turkish cotton

From bath towels to bedsheets, it can be easy to forget how widespread the uses of cotton are. To be truthful, what would we even do without this plush textile? Whilst there are endless options out there, finding eco-friendly cotton is the tricky part. Cue: the beloved Turkish cotton!

Turkish cotton is known as the finest in the world, and for good reason. Embedded in the
country's rich history, it's from Turkey that cotton started its migration to Europe. Today, Turkish farmers still draw upon the same traditions to create this world-class textile. So, what makes it so special?

The history of Turkish cotton
Turkish cotton is such a firm favourite because of the country's long-standing history with it.
Dating back to at least 400 A.D, its production has been an important cultural cornerstone for thousands of years. When the Roman Empire held power in the region, the Turkish towel gained popularity and was widely used in 'hammams', the public bathhouses that still exist today. It then made its way across Europe and spread to the rest of the world, known for its luxurious feel. Over time, Turkish cotton grew to be one of the world's most coveted types of fabrics, with Turkey now producing approximately 40% of the earth's organic cotton.

Eco-friendly practices
Mainly grown in the Aegean region in Turkey, Turkish cotton is both eco-friendly and
sustainable. Let's be honest, we wouldn't have it any other way at Turquoise Beach Co.
However, with the greenwashing phenomenon taking place at the moment, it's easy for brands to make false claims about sustainability without worrying about the consequences. The same could not be said about organic Turkish cotton.

Cotton farmers in Turkey benefit from the ideal growing climate for the crop and utilise age-old practices that have been passed down from generation to generation. No nasty chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides are used during its production. Furthermore, the rich soil in the Aegean region means that less watering is needed to grow the crop, which leads to less energy being used. This is not only better for the environment, but also for the farmers.

Premium artisan fabric
Would it be biased of us to say that we love every single aspect of Turkish cotton? We think not! The characteristics of this fibre make for the perfect bath towel, and we can't get enough of it! Here are a few reasons why:

Flatweave
One of the most memorable characteristics of Turkish cotton is its ‘flatweave’. As the name
suggests, this method of weaving creates towels that are lightweight, soft and extremely
portable. Whether you want to use yours as a beach towel or for the gym, its uses are so
versatile.

Extra Long Fibres
Compared to regular cotton, Turkish cotton breeds longer threads. This makes the fabric
smoother because there are fewer seams. Additionally, it also leads to the fabric being more
long-lasting, meaning you can buy less! If you’re a fan of buying better to reduce waste, then this is just for you. Oh, and did we mention that Turkish cotton becomes fluffier and softer with successive washings? What more could you want!

At Turquoise Beach Co, we work hand in hand with producers to ensure you enjoy high-quality, luxurious comfort from every one of our Turkish cotton towels. We want you to love our towels just as much as we do, which is why we put so much care into handpicking the best ones.
